The Syrinx Concerts Orchestra

The Syrinx Concerts Choirs

The Syrinx Vocal Ensemble

Founded in Vence in 1992 by Errol Girdlestone, its permanent conductor, the Ensemble Vocal Syrinx provides amateur singers with the opportunity to perform choral works at a high level of excellence.

It is made up of some forty dedicated singers who share a passion for music and choral singing. Ongoing recruiting tends to favour candidates with musical training or experience in choral singing.

The EVS performs in concert regularly with the Syrinx Concerts Orchestra and with an array of international soloists (in Monaco, Nice, Saint-Maximin, Vence, Leipzig, Cagnes-sur-Mer). Its large and varied repertoire stretches from the Renaissance to the present day and includes several first performances.

The EVS has sought exchanges with choirs from abroad, and plans to pursue the practise. In 2002 and 2004 the choir travelled to Leipzig for concerts with the Leipziger Oratorienchor.

Cantores In Vencia

E
nlarging the scope of Syrinx activities, the latest departure is a quality professional choral group. Finely honed a cappella singing is a little-known art in the Mediterranean countries, interest in singing being mainly concerned with opera, the art of French mélodie, and music of folk origin such as Neapolitan song.

It is symptomatic that, while all the musicians of Syrinx¹s excellent orchestra are locally resident professionals, we have to look as far afield as Paris for most of the Cantores singers.

The a cappella repertoire is vast, and includes music by all the great European composers. By neglecting it we are losing out on untold musical riches.

Only recently has France begun to embrace high-calibre professional a cappella singing, and it is pulling in enthusiastic audiences all over the place. The launch of Cantores in Vencia at a recent Syrinx choral festival was no exception, coming as it did in the wake of a sensational concert given by the Hilliard Ensemble, and followed immediately by the world-famous Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.

We are proud to say  that Cantores was able to hold its head high in such distinguished company, and the future looks very promising.
